How to study for the E-Jet E2 type rating
A practical plan for the weeks before and during your E2 course, from an E-Jet instructor.
The short version
- Learn the cockpit layout before ground school
- Turn flows into habits with daily repetition
- Arrive at each simulator session already fluent with the FMS and the autopilot modes
1. Before ground school: the layout
Spend a few short sessions learning where every panel and switch is. When the systems lessons start, you will connect each system to a place in the cockpit instead of to a page in a manual.
2. During ground school: systems and EICAS
Study one system at a time and look at its synoptic page each time. Ask yourself what the crew would see on EICAS when that system has a problem.
3. Before the simulator: flows and FMS
Rehearse the flows from your airline's material until you can do them without reading. Practice FMS setup until the page sequence is automatic, so sim time goes into flying.
4. Autopilot modes and the FMA
Know which mode each button arms or engages and how it appears on the FMA. Most automation surprises in training come from not reading the FMA.
5. Between sessions
After each sim session, write down what slowed you down and rehearse exactly that before the next one.
Always use your airline's approved manuals and procedures. This guide is a study method, not a procedure.
